Volunteer with YCAN
YCAN is entirely run by volunteers. Some have been involved with community groups for many years, while others have come to us out of a desire to do something about the climate crisis, and have never considered themselves as activists.
If you are sick of the inaction from our governments and the influence of the fossil fuel lobby, if you want to make your neighbourhood a more sustainable and pleasant place and meet like-minded people from your local area, then we encourage you to get involved.
One way to meet the YCAN team and find out what we do is to come along to a general meeting or join an existing team. We have a local action group made up of transport, urban agriculture, waste minimisation, energy, and built environment working groups and a state and national actions group.
We will also advertise specific volunteer roles as they become available below. To apply for a volunteer role please contact us.

YCAN Media Coordinator – Volunteer/Intern position
Yarra Climate Action Now is looking for one or more people with skills, experience or just plain enthusiasm to play a leading role in spreading the word in the media about all our great local projects and campaigns. Right now we have lots of exciting work to promote including: Yarra Community Solar, local urban agriculture initiatives, activities for campaigns including 100% Renewables, Replace Hazelwood and more.
Over the last few years YCAN has built up a large network of volunteers and contacts around the City of Yarra and the broader environment movement. We already communicate via a range of platforms – a website, social media, an e-newsletter etc. We’ve gotten lots of local media around our campaigns and events. But we are looking to grow our coverage and be more systematic about how we engage with the media.
The position is for a coordinator of media activities. We are looking for people who could commit at least a few hours a week. The role can be tailored to suit your own interests, skills and the time you have available. For example, it could include:
- Getting YCAN in the media – helping build relationships with local papers, writing media releases, getting slots on the radio etc.
- Contributing to our website, Facebook, Twitter and Flickr sites – and any other online and social media.
- Coordinating YCAN Media skills training – helping/joining our media interview practice sessions.
This role would suit Media/Communications students looking to gain practical experience and new networks, not to mention helping us all avoid runaway climate change. It may also appeal to experienced media professionals looking to lend a hand to an important cause.
